Never Give Up! Never Surrender!!

HI Jaxo!!!
Im excited to get your email this week again!  I really enjoy reading about your experiences.  You are a great writer!  Really expressive. ðŸĪŠ

So tell me all about it!!  How is your apartment?  You said last time that your bathroom was being fixed.  What did they have to fix?  How is the new Kitchen floor? What is the neighborhood like? Any Pics?

How is your companion? What is his name? Where is he from? Is he a good guy?  What is your daily schedule like?  Dad and I are still getting up at 6am for scriptures and prayer.  We figure its a good habit we don't want to change. Of course, we end up reading a lot more and saying the prayer a lot more often when its just us. 😁

You said last email that you were able to go out and teach a lady and that she was almost ready for baptism. Did that happen? Have you been able to teach other people this week?  How do you find referrals?  Do you go tracting?

We had a fun thing this week.  We finally got the opportunity to have the missionaries over for dinner.  Elder Periloux and Elder Mulcahy.  Sister Dunning was supposed to feed them, but she wasn't feeling well, so we did.  We also invited the Linnemeyers to join us since if I am going to cook food we might as well have enough people over to enjoy it!  So we had Frickadales and Benson said they were the best meatballs he had ever had in his life!!!😂Too funny!! Cohen was afraid the Mashed Potatoes were actually mashed cauliflower in disguise - apparently they have tried that before at their house. ðŸĪĢ  It was funny!  they are a great family!  Those kids are all looking up to you!  They love you!

OK so I told you we were going down to SLC for Bri's Institute Choir Concert last Sunday.  It was awesome!!  Last Sunday's concert was a preview for the 2019 Spring Church Music Festival at the Assembly Hall on Temple Square on Friday.  The songs performed were winners from the 2019 Church Music Submissions.  There were original songs and arrangements of hymns, or primary songs, performed by the choir soloists and instrumentalists. ðŸ˜‰ We were actually able to watch the performance on Friday night live on a broadcast on LDS.org!https://www.lds.org/church/events/temple-square-events/2019-church-music-festival?lang=eng (just in case you are allowed to check it out)😉  The songs and arrangements are available for church use on lds.org too!  Ive attached a PDF of one of the songs that was performed by a young man.  I think you might enjoy it.

I don't want you to think that I am ignoring the elephant in the room.  I absolutely heard what you had to say last Monday.  I have been thinking about you and praying for you all week.  Of course, I am praying for you constantly, so that is nothing new.🙏 We also had a family fast for you.  I stand by what I said then. You will learn and grow and progress so much more out there, serving the Savior by serving the people there in your mission.  I found a great quote by President Hinckley,

"I promise you that the time you spend in the mission field, if those years are spent in dedicated service, will yield a greater return on investment than any other two years of your lives. You will come to know what dedication and consecration mean. You will develop powers of persuasion which will bless your entire life. Your timidity, your fears, your shyness will gradually disappear as you go forth with boldness and conviction. You will learn to work with others, to develop a spirit of teamwork. You will draw nearer to the Lord than you likely will in any other set of circumstances. You will come to know that without His help you are indeed weak and simple, but that with His help you can accomplish miracles."
President Hinckley knew what he was talking about.  He had experienced feelings similar to yours. You've probably heard the story about when President Hinckley served his mission but Im going to give it to you anyway.  He said,
"When I arrived there I was not well. I felt I wasn't getting anywhere in the missionary work, and I became discouraged. I wrote a letter to my father and said, "I'm wasting my time and your money. I don't see any point in my staying here." And in due time a letter came back from him in which he simply said: "Dear Gordon. I have your letter of [such and such a date]. I have only one suggestion: Forget yourself and go to work. With love, your father."
I pondered that, and the next morning in our scripture class, we read that great statement of the Lord, "He that [saveth] his life shall lose it: ... he that loseth his life for my sake [and the gospel] shall find it." It touched me. That statement, that promise, in conjunction with my father's letter, prompted me to go upstairs in the little bedroom at 15 Wadham Road, Preston, Lancashire, where we lived, get on my knees, and make a covenant with the Lord that I would try to forget myself and go to work. I count that as the day of decision in my life. Everything good that's happened to me since then, I can trace back to the decision I made at that time."
You are not alone in feeling unprepared and unworthy.  You are actually in very good company.  Most of the people I have talked to that have served missions have said they had personal struggles while serving.
So how to get through this?  Forget yourself and Go To Work.
Another quote from President Hinckley,
"I am not suggesting you simply put on rose-colored glasses to make the world about you look rosy. I ask, rather, that you look above and beyond the negative, the critical, the cynical, the doubtful, to the positive and the affirmative."
Remember what Hank Smith and John Bytheway taught - You have to choose to be happy.  You have to choose a good attitude. Remember the guy who got shot that told the doctors he was allergic to bullets.  His good attitude changed the attitude of those around him.  He asked the doctors to operate on him as if he was going to live. He made it.  You need to choose the attitude that you are going to succeed, You are going to go out and spread the gospel all over the mission!  You are going to have tough days. This is mortality. Choosing a good attitude will make all of the difference.
I know you have made some mistakes. Remember! there is no one on earth who has not. Doctrine and Covenants 60:7 says-
"And in this place let them lift up their voice and declare my word with loud voices, without wrath or doubting, lifting up holy hands upon them. For I am able to make you holy, and your sins are forgiven you."
The best way to make up for your mistakes is to serve the Lord with all of your heart. Get up each day with the attitude that your are going to do your absolute best for Him by serving everyone around you. That includes your Companion,  Zone Leaders, Mission President, Ward Members, Investigators, etc.  Look for ways that you can be the Lords hands.  Then at the end of each day, look back over the day to see the Lords hand in your life that day and write it down.  Then, later, when you look back you will be able to see how far you have come.

Jaxon, I know you can do this.
I have no doubt.
We are here for you. Always.

Never Give Up! Never Surrender!!
Bless the Rains!!!!
Love, Mom

Jaxon - UGANDA WEEK ONE!!

Mon 2/18/2019 7:03 AM

Hey everyone!!!
Sorry it has been so long before I emailed again. Last week was traveling week from the MTC to the Mission Home then to the apartment in my first area. Well now I'm back and boy do I have a lot to talk about!!
So last week on Tuesday was the departure day for everyone, but the first flight for those going to Uganda wasn't until 12:10 pm. AND THAT WAS AFTER BEING AT THE AIRPORT SINCE 6:30 A.M.!!!! When we finally got to the mission home that night, It was about 11:30 pm!!
The next morning, we were able to find out which areas we would be in and also who our companions were. I found out that I would be in an area known as Mengo and that it was one of the closest areas to the capital Kampala!! I'd say that's pretty nice!!
One thing that was really cool about this weekend was the fact that Elder Stevenson came to talk to us!! On Saturday, he talked to us about our missionary work and the Preach My Gospel. We talked a lot about the individual chapters in the Preach My Gospel and how they are all very important in the work that we do.
Sunday was kind of like a conference and we were able to listen to Elder Stevenson a second time!! It's nice being so close to Kampala so that we don't have to travel so far.
Later that night we were able to do FHE at a members house and play a game that related to prophets and how they receive revelation to better guide the church. We were also able to teach a friend of that family and it seems like she really wants to listen to what we have to say!! She has been in other lessons with missionaries before and it seems like she is almost ready for baptism. They have a date set for next week on Sunday, but they also believe that she won't be quite ready by then.
Today has been very chill, being that it is Prep Day. One of our bathrooms is being fixed and our kitchen floor is now being redone, so we have been just kind of hanging out in the living room a lot of the day. I've been able to study a good amount and I've been looking at scriptures that have to do with Repentance and Faith in Jesus Christ. A really good one that I found for repentance is Moses 6:57. It talks about teaching children everywhere that everyone must repent, "or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God."
Well, that's all I have for today! I hope to maybe hear from a lot more of you soon!! This is Elder Buchanan, signing off!!!

Jaxon - Elder Buchanan's Safe Arrival

February 14, 2019

Brother and Sister Buchanan,

Greetings from the Uganda Kampala Mission.

We are happy to report that your son, Elder Buchanan, is now serving in his area here in Uganda.  We are very happy to have him here and we will take good care of him.
Warmest Regards,

Uganda Kampala Mission Office

February 14, 2019

Dear Brother and Sister Buchanan,

We want you to know that your son, Elder Jaxon Connor Buchanan has arrived in the Uganda Kampala Mission.  I was very pleased to note the preparation, worthiness and commitment of your son to be obedient and to serve the Lord honorably.  He spent his first day at the Mission Home where he had lots of special training and food.

Elder Buchanan is a choice young Elder, eager to be an excellent missionary.  His testimony is strong and I am honored to have him serve in our Mission.  He will be laboring in the Kampala South Zone with an excellent trainer, Elder Schwendiman.  Sister Collings and I will see him in a timely manner at Zone Conferences and I will have an interview with him on those occasions. This is a wonderful mission and I know that he will be successful.  We pledge to keep our eyes and hearts open to his needs.

Thank you for teaching, nurturing and sending forth this fine young Elder. He will serve the Lord, honor your family and other loved ones.  The Missionary Department has authorized e-mail to the family once a week and we are grateful for this added blessing. His P-day for email is Mondays.  May the Lord bless you with peace and assurance that all is in His hands.

Yours Sincerely,

President Stephen H. Collings Uganda Kampala Mission

Jaxon - He Made It to Uganda!!

Tue 2/12/2019 9:53 PM

Hey mom and dad!!
We made it into Uganda and now we are at the mission home! It is honestly super nice and the mission president and his wife are really nice. This morning we actually were able to go on a little run through some of Kampala with President Collins. It is SUPER humid down here and it's technically the rainy season right now. No such thing as the regular seasons, just rainy and dry seasons.I just took a shower about maybe 15 minutes ago, but holy cow I can't stay completely dry for the life of me!!
So our emails were just updated a couple of days ago. My email now ends with @missionary.org now instead of the other one. Please make sure to tell everyone else so that they don't go emailing to the wrong one.
Anyways, just another little update before I really get out into the mission field!! First orientation is today, and on Saturday, Elder Stevenson is actually coming to the whole of the Uganda Kampala Mission!!! That's pretty awesome!! P-day has been confirmed for Monday's so that is nice to know.
Well, I guess I should get off to let the others onto the computer. I'll be on again on Monday so stay tuned!!

Jaxon - Quick Email Before Uganda!!

Mon 2/11/2019 7:08 AM
Real quick to you guys, this is just like an update email before I get out in the field.
This week has been a lot faster than it usually feels, mainly because our morning teacher was sick for a couple days. It's alright though, we've learned a lot and that matters the most. We've been having a lot of fun and some people even started doing some pranks to each other. My class, districts 1 and 2, have been doing little testimony meetings in our rooms and like a district prayer. It has been really awesome and it has always been super spiritual when we do. We just started taking the malaria medication yesterday because you're not supposed to start it until 2 days before you get to the area, which happened to be yesterday. So other than that, there hasn't really been anything new that happened this week. I'll have to get back with more stuff next week when I'll be out in the field!! It's so weird I'm already getting out there!!
So, for now, this is Elder Buchanan, signing off!!!

Jaxon - Week TWO!! (Out of like 106)

Tue 2/5/2019 6:10 AM

I don't have much time to write this but here goes!!

Is there a possible way to say a lot happened, but it didn't feel like it? Cause that is kinda how I'm feeling right about now. We finished up teaching "Arnold" (Brother Adlard) and I think my companion and I ended it pretty well. We were able to place the BoM and we even got him to do the closing prayer on his knees!! I thought that was pretty awesome!! Now we are teaching  the next person, who is supposed to be harder than the last, but so far I think we've been pretty good! It's one of the Sister teachers pretending to be a woman named Kathy who has a medical condition where her muscles tend to get inflamed if she either stands or sits for too long, or she is in the heat for too long. A big thing my companion and I need to do for her is to be caring and loving, and I believe that we started off very well! She was very receptive of us and didn't really shy away from us when we "ran into her on the street." Sunday was pretty good, being as it was Fast and Testimony Meeting. Everyone had to share a 2 minute or less testimony and a lot of people got pretty teary eyed. I was a part of a musical number in the middle, and since we started in the back and I was in the front, it was a chance for me to see if I was last or not. Turns out, It was just in the right order for me to be last. My companion went before me and made it hard for me when I got up because he is a very loving person and probably the most spiritual out of our entire group. I'm so happy to have him as my companion. The past two days, our teacher for in the mornings has been sick, so we've had a substitute teacher. It's different not having our actual teachers because I think we have made a pretty good connection with the teachers themselves. We can be able to have some fun and joke around a little bit, but still get the work done. Just as I've heard many times here in the MTC, "Have fun and GET IT DONE!"

This is Elder Buchanan, Signing off until next time!!!

Hiya momma!! It's been a pretty long week here at the MTC, but I think I'm already starting to feel how fast time flies!! It is already February!! I'll try and upload some pictures here, but I'm not sure how many I will due to the fact that I'm on the clock. The food has been pretty good so far. There was one meal where we had what they called Paap (I'm not sure how they spell it). It's that food I described to you guys at Patio Grill before I left that basically a tasteless blob that is meant to be a filler for the main course of the meal. Today, we had a huge sandwich that looked VERY American and I LOVED it. But I feel like they should be giving us more African meals for us to get used to. The classes have been going well. One day, we had to bear our testimonies about the Atonement of Jesus Christ and I think everyone was choking up when they were talking (especially me). This past Sunday I got to play the piano! I used the simplified Hymnbook they had being as I FORGOT MINE AT HOME!!! I played pretty well, and they asked me to play again this next coming Sunday! And just so you know, I do know the Elder Jenkins, but I had no idea he was related to Brad!! I will make sure to bring that up next time!! Anyways, I'm sure you are trying to sleep right now, but I know you might wake up being as it is almost time for you to wake up.

From you Elder son,
Elder Buchanan
